#1: Writing Exercise: [ Do you like Starbucks? What do you usually order there?, スターバックスが好きですか。スタバで、普段、何を注文しますか。] Write your answer in Japanese.

Instruction for Writing Practice

こんにちは。Motoです。For writing practice, I am introducing the following method. You can apply my method to your Japanese Writing Practice.

1: I pick up one question from “Discussion/Further Discussion” on the DMM英会話Daily News. This time, the question is

“Do you like Starbucks? What do you usually order there?, スターバックスが好きですか。スタバで、普段、何を注文しますか

2: I try to write answer sentences to “The Question” in English.

3: Usually, I will ask ChatGPT to correct my answer and compare the original one and corrected one.

4: For someone learning Japanese, I will leave my answer and its Japanese translation as example. (I will translate my answer loosely in Japanese, not literally.)

5: Now, your turn. try to write your answer in Japanese to “The Question”. You can refer to my translated answer in Japanese as example.

6: Put the question and your Japanese sentences in ChatGPT and get a correction.

7: if you like, post your original sentences and corrected sentences. I will check your sentences and leave comments.

Notes

1: Many mistakes are necessary for improvement. It is OK to write just simple and short sentences.

2: Try to think about appropriate sentence structure and logical flow (this part is the most important).

3, In a comment section (Blog, Twitter, Reddit etc.), post your answer in Japanese in48 hoursfrom posting this thread. Sometimes, I cannot respond to all (especially, off topic) because I have limitation of time but I try to check your writing.

4: If you add explanation and English translation, it will be helpful to understand and check your sentences more accurately.

The Question

 Here is the question.

“Do you like Starbucks? What do you usually order there?, スターバックスが好きですか。スタバで、普段、何を注文しますか。

Example Answer in Japanese and English

This is a just example. If you are Beginner or Intermediate level learners, it is OK to write just simple and short sentences.

私はスタバが好きじゃありません。なぜならスタバのコーヒーの味が嫌いだからです。ローストし過ぎで美味しくないし、値段が高いからです。友達と集まるのに、他のカフェが見つからない場合のみ、スタバに行きますが、普段は他のカフェに行きます。

(Corrected by ChatGPT: I don't particularly like Starbucks because I'm not a fan of the flavor of their coffee. It's too roasted for my taste, and I find it a bit expensive. If I can't find any other cafes to have a gathering my friends, I might go there, but I usually prefer other cafes.)

私(わたし)はスタバが好(す)きじゃありません。なぜならスタバのコーヒーの味(あじ)が嫌()きらいだからです。ローストし過(す)ぎで美味(おい)しくないし、値段(ねだん)が高(たか)いからです。友達(ともだち)と集(あつ)まるのに、他(ほか)のカフェが見(み)つからない場合(ばあい)のみ、スタバに行(い)きますが、普段(ふだん)は他(ほか)のカフェに行(い)きます。

#16 Moto Writing Doujou: Topic: Topic: Are there any foods that you have for your health and please explain why do you eat on a daily basis?自分の健康のために、食べている食品はありますか。なぜそれらを日常的に食べていますか。

納豆ご飯

Aim of Practice

I think one of important things to improve writing is to write a lot. Thus, I think it is better for us to have co-learning online.

First, I will give you a question Are there any foods that you have for your health and please explain why do you eat on a daily basis? 自分の健康のために、食べている食品はありますか。なぜそれらを日常的に食べていますか。”. I referred to a question “Are there any foods or drinks that you try to avoid? Why? Why not?” from an article “Olive Oil May Be Good for Heart Health in DMM Eikaiwa. I have partially changed this question for our writing practice.

Try to come up with appropriate logical structure (I think this part is the most important) and write your answer. If you like, share your writing on the comment section in Reddit, Facebook or YouTube. I will correct it in natural Japanese.

Instruction of Practice: What will we do?

1, Try to think of appropriate structure of writing to answer the given question.
2, Write your answer with appropriate expressions.
3, If you like, share your writing on the comment section in Reddit, Facebook or YouTube.

If you have difficulty to use Kanji, only using Hiragana and Katakana is also OK. This is just practice so don’t hesitate and just try. If you also have difficulty to read Kanji, use this web site put Kanji and push “ひらがな”.

Question

Are there any foods that you have for your health and please explain why do you eat on a daily basis? 自分の健康のために、食べている食品はありますか。なぜそれらを日常的に食べますか。”.

Example Answer

For Intermediate Level Learner

If you want to write something about another topic, try to do following practice.

(1) I introduce an article Olive Oil May Be Good for Heart Health from DMM Eikaiwa. DMM Eikaiwa is a web site for Japanese people learning English. I try to apply this web site to Japanese writing activity.

To understand topic, read the introduced article in DMM Eikaiwa. News Article sometimes has Japanese Translation but sometimes does not have Japanese Translation. This is not reading practice so if you cannot understand Japanese translation, it is OK to just read English sentences to understand the topic.

Link: DMMEikaiwa

(2) Under the news article in DMM Eikaiwa, you can find out “Questions”, “Discussion” and “Further Discussion”. We do not use “Questions”. This is because “Questions” is made up of easy questions and it seems to be designed for reading activity. Thus, please choose one question from “Discussion” or “Further Discussion” for your writing.

(3) Try to write your answer sentences and if you like, share on the comment in Reddit. Facebook or Reddit. To make sure which question you chose, it is better to write the question that you referred to in “Discussion” or “Further Discussion”

Question and Comment

If you have some questions about topic or some Japanese expressions to write question and answer, ask me in the comment section on Reddit, Facebook or YouTube. If you ask me something in English, I will respond in English. If Japanese, I will respond in Japanese. That might be good practice in writing. Although I cannot respond to all (Especially, off topic) because I have limitation of time, I try to comment.

Practice

Now, your turn. Try to write answers and share your writings in the comment section on Reddit, Facebook or YouTube.

#2 Moto Writing Doujou, "McDonald's to Offer Rice Burgers in Japan マクドナルド、日本でごはんバーガーを提供"

Aim of Japanese Writing Club

I am learning English and I want to improve more. Thus, making video or writing blog with English translation is a good practice for me.

On the other hand, I’m also interested in introducing how to practice Japanese. Thus, I am writing blog or making video about learning Japanese.

As you know, one of important things to improve writing is to write a lot.
Thus, I think it is better for us to have co-learning online that we check an article, we try to write question sentence, write its answer as writing practice and share them on Reddit.

Writing Practice: What will we do?

(1) To understand topics, read the introduced article in my Blog. This is not reading practice so if you cannot understand Japanese translation, it is OK to just read English sentences to understand the topic.

If you have difficulties to read some Kanji in the article, use below web site to change Kanji to hiragana. Copy and paste Kanji and push ひらがな button.

(2) From the article, pick up some words. This is just preparation to come up with ideas to make a question sentence. I will show you how to do that in Blog.

(3) Come up with a question sentence, write a question sentence and answer by yourself. You do not have to make a question sentence strictly related to article’s topic. It is also OK to make a question that you just use key words introduced in the article. I will show you examples in Blog.

(4) If you like, share your question and answer sentences in the comment section on Reddit. (It is also OK for you to respond to someone’s question)

☆(5If you have questions about topic or some Japanese expressions in the article, please ask me in the comment section on Reddit. That might be good practice in writing. Although I cannot respond to all because I have limitation of time, I try to comment.

Non () Japanese is original translation introduced in DMM Eikaiwa. ()Japanese is my version of translation.

DMM Eikaiwa is a web site for Japanese guy learning English so original translation might be intentionally understandable for them. That’s why some Japanese expressions might be not natural. Thus, I add my version.

Let’s read the article below.

------------------------Start here news article ------------------------
McDonald's to Offer Rice Burgers in Japan
マクドナルド、日本でごはんバーガーを提供

McDonald's will sell burgers with buns made of rice – or "gohan burgers" – in its restaurants in Japan from February 5 until mid-May 2020.
マクドナルドは、お米できたバンズを使用したバーガーである「ごはんバーガー」を、202025日から5月中旬まで日本の店舗で販売する。

CNN Business reports that the rice burger buns will be made with rice grown in Japan and soy sauce.
ごはんバーガーのバンズは日本で育った米と醤油で作られる、とCNNビジネスは報じる。
CNNによると、ごはんバーガーには日本産の米と醤油が使われる予定である。)

There will be three types of rice bun burger for customers to choose from: the Bacon Lettuce Burger, the Teriyaki McBurger and the Chicken Filet O'.
顧客が選べる3種類のごはんバーガーがあり、ベーコンレタスバーガー、てりやきマックバーガー、チキンフィレオだ。

(ごはんバーガーは3種類あり、ベーコンレタスバーガー、てりやきマックバーガー、チキンフィレオから選べる。)

The new burgers will be part of the fast food restaurant's "Night Mac" menu, which customers can buy from 5 p.m. to closing time.
新しいバーガーは、ファストフードレストランの「夜マック」メニューの一部となり、顧客は午後5時から閉店時間まで購入できる。

(新しいバーガーは、「夜マック」メニューの一部として販売され、午後5時から閉店時間まで購入できる。)

SoraNews24 says that before McDonald's announced the rice burgers, it sent a tweet just saying, "Ahh, I want to eat rice …"
マクドナルドのごはんバーガーの発表前、同社は「あぁー、、、お米たべたい」とだけツイートした、とソラニュース24は述べる。

(ごはんバーガーの発表前、マクドナルドは「あぁー、、、お米たべたい」とだけツイートした、とソラニュース24は報じている。)

This got people on the internet trying to guess what it meant, with some thinking that McDonald's was going to put the rice and breaded pork cutlet it sold in the 1990s back on the menu.
これによりインターネット上の人々はその意味を予想しようとし、マクドナルドが1990年代に販売されたごはんとトンカツをメニューに戻すつもりだと考えた人もいた。

(これをうけて、ネットユーザーはこのツイートが何を意味するか予想しようした。90年代に販売されたごはんとトンカツのメニューを再販売するつもりだと予想した人もいた。)

"People didn't know there was going to be a new product so it created a lot of suspense. Everyone had a lot of hope for what it would be," Kokoro Toyama from McDonald's Japan told CNN Business.
「人々は新しい商品が出ることを知らなかったので、多くのそわそわ感を生んだ。 それが何かについて誰もが多くの期待を抱いた」と日本マクドナルドのココロ・トヤマはCNNビジネスに語った。

日本マクドナルドのトヤマ・ココロ氏はCNNビジネスのインタビューに次のように答えた。“新商品についての情報を部分的にしか出さなかったので、お客様の間に期待感を生んだと思います。”

Toyama also explained that McDonald's had found out that Japanese people in their 30s and 40s preferred rice to bread with dinner, but still wanted to enjoy the burgers they ate when they were younger.
さらに、30代と40代の日本人は夕食にパンよりもご飯を好むが、依然として若い時に食べたハンバーガーを楽しみたいと思っていることにマクドナルドは気づいた、とトヤマは説明した。

(トヤマ氏はそれに加えて、次のように説明した。“30代と40代の日本人は夕食にパンよりもご飯を好むが、依然として若い時に食べたハンバーガーも楽しみたいと思っていることに弊社は気が付きました。”)

McDonald's isn't the first company to make a rice bun burger, however. Japanese burger restaurant MOS Burger has had one since 1987.
しかし、マクドナルドはごはんバーガーを作った最初の会社ではない。 日本のハンバーガーレストランであるモスバーガーには、1987年からそれが存在する。

(ただ、マクドナルドが日本でごはんバーガーを作った最初の会社ではなく、 モスバーガーは、1987年から既に販売している。)

’Pick up some words as preparation

I try to pick up some words because some words might be clues to come up with question and answer sentence.

Example Expressions

マクドナルド MacDonald’s

ハンバーガー hamburger
メニュー menu

ファストフード fast food
ごはん rice

パン bread

販売する sell
売る
発売 start to sell
日本産 items produced in Japan

種類 type

購入する buy
買う

ネットユーザー internet user

再販売 resale, sell something again

期待感 expectation

Example Question sentence & Answer

If we make a question asking too much detail, and requiring special knowledge, only limited number of people can answer. That is not good question for practice. Thus, I try to make simple question.

Example:

Now I try to make simple questions. The topic for the article is McDonald's and McDonald's is of course fast food restaurant so I chose “fast food” as a topic for question like this.

Q: どのファストフードレストランによく行きますか。それはなぜですか。
I think asking “why” is really important leading to exciting discussion.

A: 家の近くにマックとバーガーキングがありますが、私はバーガーキングのほうによくいきます。 There are Macdonald’s and Burger King near my house. I prefer Burger King to McDonald's.

私が住んでいるエリアでは、バーガーキングのコーヒーは少しマックより高いですが、バーガーキングのコーヒーはマックのコーヒーより美味しいので、それがよく行く理由です。 In my town, the coffee price of Burger King is little more expensive than that of Mac but I think Burger King’s coffee is much more tasty than that of Mac. That’s why I often go to Burger King.

あと、バーガーキングのフライドポテトは、おそらく注文が入ってから揚げる方式だと思うので、ポテトも、マックより美味しいと思います。なので、バーガーキングへよく行きます。In addition to that, I think Burger King’s fried potato is fried to order. Thus, I think its potato is more tasy than that of Mac. That is also one of reasons.

Practice

Now, your turn. If you want to practice, try to pick up words, come up with question, answer by yourself, share your writings in the comment section on Reddit or YouTube. It is also good for you to respond to questions posted by other guys.

Smart Carts Could Change How We Shop

"Smart" shopping carts that register your items as you shop, recognize your face, and help you find products are being tested in supermarkets.

One company leading the way is Caper in New York. Its Smart Carts allow people to scan products as they shop and pay for them by card.

(この分野で先頭を行く企業はニューヨークを拠点とするケイパーである。スマートカートにより、買い物の際に商品をスキャンし、カードでの支払いが可能になる。)

It also lets supermarkets send customers discounts and suggest items as they shop, with Caper saying that communicating with shoppers this way means people buy an average of 18% more per shopping trip.

Supermarket News also says that the screens on the carts will one day be able to help Sobeys customers find items in stores, and that as the technology gets better, they won't even have to scan items – the cart will know what they are as they go in.

’Pick up some words as preparation

I try to pick up some words because some words might be clues to come up with question and answer sentence.

Example Expressions

スーパーマーケット
Supermarket

買い物かご
Shopping basket

買い物カート
Shopping cart

買い物カートが商品を記録する。
Shopping cart registers your items.

カードで支払いもできる。(メリット)
Customer can pay for the items by credit card. (advantage for customer)

カートが割引の情報を送ってくる。(メリット)
Shopping cart sends discount to customer. (advantage for customer)

商品の情報を送ってくる。(メリット)
Shopping cart sends information about items to customer. (advantage for customer)

新技術のおかげで、一人あたりの売上が上がる。(店のメリット)
Thanks to new technology, sales per customer increase. (advantage for shops)

将来、商品を探すのを手伝ってくれる。(客のメリット)
In the future, high tech cart will help customerfind out items in a store.

将来は、スキャンする必要もなくなる。
In the future, customer will not need to scan items.

北京のスーパーでは、顔認識の技術で、支払いができる。(新技術)
In Beijing’s supermarket, people can pay for items by facial recognition system. (New technology, Sideway)

Example Question sentence & Answer

If we make a question asking too much detail, and requiring special knowledge, only limited number of people can answer. That is not good question for practice. Thus, I try to make simple question.

Example:

In above introduced essay, while I was trying to pick up words, I realized it introduces only advantages. Thus, I think it might be more exciting to make question that let us think not only advantages but also disadvantages.

I just simply ask “advantage and disadvantage”.

Q、将来、ハイテクショッピングカートが導入されると、どんなメリット、デメリットがあると思いますか。
If we introduce high tech shopping cart in the future, what kind of advantage and disadvantage will we have?

Now, I try to answer the question by myself for practice.

A、メリットは買い物の時間が短縮できることだと思います。デメリットは災害があって、大規模に停電した場合、もしスマートカートのシステムに依存していたら、何も買えなくなるかもしれないことです。
An advantage is to save time in shopping. When it comes to disadvantage, when we have natural disaster, that could bring large scale of power cut. In this situation, people cannot buy anything if they depend on smart cart system.

北海道では2018年の地震の際に、スマートフォンを使ったオンライン決済のシステムが一部で使えなくて物が買えなかったという報告があったので, 社会の安全インフラとして、ある程度はアナログな方法も残しておいたほうがいいと思います。
Hokkaido experienced earthquake in 2018. At that time, people reported that although they wanted to buy food and water right after earthquake, they could not use cashless online payment by smart phone because of blackout. Therefore, I think it might be good to remain conventional way as security infrastructure.

Going to sideway

I think there might be other strategy to make questions like “Going to sideway”.

We do not have to adhere to make question strictly related to “smart cart” so we can make question by using other key words introduced in the article such as “supermarket”, “facial recognition system”.

For example, “What kind of differences does your country’s supermarket have compared with other country’s supermarkets?”

Q:あなたの国のスーパーは他の国のスーパーに比べてどんな違いがありますか。

As you see, I try to make simple question and little bit going to sideway while I use a keyword introduced in the article.

Another example,
Q:将来、様々な分野で、顔認識システムが使われることについてどう思いますか。

What do you think about introduction of facial recognition system in various fields in the future?

That also looks combination “simple question” and “going to sideway”.

Practice

Now, your turn. If you want to practice, try to pick up words, come up with question, answer by yourself, share your writings in the comment section on Reddit or YouTube. It is also good for you to respond to questions posted by other guys.
